About This Place

Situated in the heart of Greater Manchester, Wright's Fish & Chips offers an authentic taste of classic British fast food with a focus on perfectly cooked fish and hearty sides. This family-run fish and chips restaurant has become a beloved local staple on Cross Street, delivering nothing short of traditional comfort food in a warm and welcoming setting.

The menu showcases a variety of quintessential British favorites, such as the iconic Cod Chips & 1 Side, crispy yet tender pieces of cod wrapped in golden, crunchy batter, accompanied by thick-cut, fluffy chips. For those craving something a little different, dishes like Sausage Chips and Curry Sauce or the ever-popular Mini Fish Supper offer satisfying, flavorful twists. The inclusion of classic sides — from mushy peas to rich, savory gravy — elevates each meal, making every bite nostalgic yet exciting.

One of Wright’s standout qualities lies in the freshness and balance of their ingredients. As Sharif Sha highlights, the cod is “excellent,” perfectly complemented by chips and mushy peas that marry crunch with creaminess in every mouthful. Cherelle Yee praises the haddock’s light, crunchy batter that never overpowers the fish inside, a testament to the kitchen’s skill and attention to detail. These elements blend together seamlessly, producing satisfying plates that evoke the charm of traditional English chippies while ensuring each dish remains vibrant without feeling heavy.

Wright's is more than just a place to grab a quick meal; the atmosphere here is comforting, informal, and unmistakably local. The staff greet guests with genuine warmth and engaging recommendations, setting a tone that invites both repeat visits and casual stops alike. The modest seating area, accommodating up to ten diners, hints at an intimate, bustling spot where the aroma of sizzling batter and fresh-fried chips permeates the air, encouraging slow, enjoyable tasting moments amid the city’s rhythm.

Whether you're passing through or a local craving the perfect fish supper, Wright's Fish & Chips stands out with its generous portions and traditional recipes. The Chip Butty and hearty Holland’s pies — ranging from Steak & Kidney to Cheese & Onion — add further depth to the offering, catering to a variety of tastes. Parents will also appreciate the affordable kids’ menu, featuring favorites like Chicken Nuggets and Fish Bites, ensuring the whole family can indulge in classic flavors.

Customer reviews echo a near-universal affection for the food’s quality and authenticity. ST T. describes the cod and haddock as “fresh fillet and crispy batter… lightly salted” with “overall taste just perfect.” Even patrons who prefer a bit of extra zest, like Mary, praise the mushy peas for their fresh, slightly salty profile, reinforcing the thoughtful care behind every component.

Ultimately, Wright’s Fish & Chips delivers a traditional, satisfying British dining experience that feels both nostalgic and fresh. It’s a culinary gem that respects its roots while inviting food lovers to dive into wholesome, lovingly prepared dishes that linger long after the last chip is eaten.

The haddock was fried to perfection! The batter was so crunchy and not too thick. The chips and cod were satisfying too. Definitely an unexpected gem with such great value! The owners were also such sweet people - generous with the tartare sauce too!!

The cod is far too greasy—I only managed to finish half even though I was extremely hungry when eating it. I think ketchup and lemon juice are essential; the mashed peas are excellent, tasting slightly salty, fresh and healthy.

The fish was crispy on the outside, juicy and fleshy on the inside. Generous serving with chips. The ketchup and tartar sauce came with the set. A real traditional English fish n chips.

One of the best fish and chips I ever have. The place runs by a family of which, in my perspective, established in years. Cod and haddock were the main dishes in the menu. We tried both. Fresh fillet and crispy batter were lightly salted. Overall taste was just perfect. There were few seats that can accommodate not more 10 guests. Dining in could be crowded at sometimes. Highly recommended.

Visited today for the first time around 4.30pm. We were after a quick bite to eat and was actually heading to McDonald's when I noticed the chippy and my wife said 'Go on then'. Couldn't believe the bargain prices. I had to have battered sausage but after tasting my wife's fish oh my god I wish I had that. The best fish we've tasted in years. Ladies serving were absolutely lovely. Explained how long it would take to every customer as it's cooked to order. You all deserved the praise. Thank you

Great quality fish. Uses proper British fish and not the gross sloppy pangasius or basa other cheap places have resorted to. Curry sauce comes in two "heats", I went spicy and it was delicious. Chips are proper chips. Great option of a small fish dinner for £7 which in today's prices is decent because they don't scrimp on the amount of food you get.
